We value your insights and perspective here at the Job Connections Project. We want to let you know that to best understand the job search-and-match process, we have partnered with academic researchers. They want to provide you with the following info:
If you filled out the survey, you have participated in a research study conducted by researchers at the University of California San Diego. We would like to give you more details about the study you just participated in and explain what we were trying to study. We also want to provide you with information about your rights as a research participant and how we protect you.
This study explored how people’s survey responses changed depending on the language in a job ad. This means that some participants were randomly chosen to see slightly different versions of the job ad. All substantive information about the job remained the same, however when you apply to the actual job on the company’s website be sure to carefully reread the job ad to make sure you understand clearly what the job entails.
It was necessary to perform the study in this order and tell you after you saw the job ad and filled out the survey so that we didn’t influence your responses. If we told everyone the purpose of the study and what we predict, then their reactions would not be a good indication of how they would react in everyday situations. As you may know, this is not uncommon when doing research. Scientific methods sometimes require that participants not be given complete information about the research until after the study is completed. If other people knew the true purpose of the study, it might affect how they behave/answer questions, so we are asking you not to share the information we just discussed with other people looking for jobs.
Please know that the Job Connections Project will do everything in their power to protect your data. Data safeguards have been put in place and the Job Connections Project will only retain personally identifiable information (PII) to provide you with resume feedback. After this feedback is complete your PII will be destroyed. Additionally, it will not be linked to your survey results at any time.
This study is run by University of California San Diego (UCSD) PhD candidates Tanner Eastmond and Amanda Bonheur, and UCSD Professor Itzik Fadlon. Amanda and Tanner are both UCSD employees and co-founders of the Job Connections Project. This means that the non-profit will know who participates in the research. Participation or non-participation will not affect the services provided to you by the Job Connections Project.
Now that the study has been explained, you have the right to ask the investigators not to use your data. If you would like your data removed from the study please check this box:
If you checked the box above, your data will never be shared with the researchers. If you have questions about how your data is used by the non-profit, separate from the study, please see the company’s Privacy Policy. If you have additional questions, you can contact the Job Connections Project directly at info@jobconnectionsproject.org. Since your survey responses are not linked to your name or email, please include your unique survey ID code in your email.
If you have any other questions or comments about anything you did today you can get in touch with the Job Connections Project team at info@jobconnectionsproject.org or the researchers at teastmon@ucsd.edu or abonheur@ucsd.edu. You can also ask research related questions to the UCSD Human Research Protections Program at 858-246-HRPP (858-246-4777). This research project’s reference number is #806291.
Thank you again for your participation. We hope the research output will improve labor market conditions for you and other job seekers in the future!
